Tyco Electronics is closing its Mount Sidney, Va., plant next year and some of the jobs will be relocated to Waynesboro, but it is still to early to say exactly how many, according to company spokesperson Mike Ratcliff. "A number of positions have been offered to employees at Mount Sidney, should they wish to transfer. We do not know how many have been offered or how many have accepted," Ratcliff said. The two plants perform similar work and the decision was made to consolidate to the larger site in Waynesboro. Tyco isn't disclosing how many employees work at Mount Sidney -- or Waynesboro -- but a notice filed with the commonwealth of Virginia indicated that 101 people were employed at Mount Sidney as of Aug. 5. The company employs about 200 at Waynesboro, based on Franklin County Area Development Corp. data. Both plants manufacture tools used to connect wires to terminals. The products are used throughout the automotive, appliance and electronics industries. The company's third quarter sales were up slightly from the second quarter but down about 34 percent from a year ago. Last year, Tyco announced plans to cut back its global workforce in response to weaker demand for its products. The company also closed nearby plants in Emigsville, York County, and Carlisle earlier this year. Ratcliff said previously laid off employees will be given "full consideration for employment" at Waynesboro. The company will begin phasing out work at Mount Sidney beginning in October. The plant is expected to be fully closed by February. Ratcliff said Tyco plans to build on to its 70,000-square-foot building on North Grant Street, Waynesboro, to accommodate the additional work. Further details about the expansion were not available Wednesday. To see more of the Public Opinion, or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.publicopiniononline.com.
