Anti-mining group starts petition to halt Azusa mining proposal

Sep 17, 2009 (San Gabriel Valley Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- VMC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Richard Deem and his companions at Save Our Canyon don't want to be ignored.

That is why the group has created a petition against the new Vulcan Materials Co. mining proposal.

For now, the petition is something of a symbolic gesture toward city officials, but it could balloon into an effort to create a voter initiative, Deem said.

"The goal is to let the City Council know the people are against the revised conditional-use permit," Deem said. "We want to find out the people who support us. If it is necessary to start a petition to override it, we will have all our supporters lined up and will get it done in pretty quick time."

Vulcan Materials owns 270 acres of property near Fish Creek Canyon in Azusa. Of that acreage, 190 is planned for mining. In their new proposal, Vulcan officials are asking that 80acres planned for mining on the east end of that property be swapped for 80 acres on the west end.

In conjunction, the new proposal includes a new style of mining reclamation called microbenching. It would be included if the new proposal is accepted, but it won't be if the old proposal is used.

"Since mining will take place at Azusa Rock through 2038, the attempt to force continued large bench development, which is mandated under the existing plan, would be extremely disappointing for all of the Valley's residents," Vulcan Materials spokesman Todd Priest said.

Deem and those working with him hope to collect at least

1,000 signatures by November, prior to any vote by the City Council. That is also the amount of signatures needed in the future to push a voter initiative.

"It sends a pretty strong message that we shouldn't be ignored," Deem said.

City Council members have been instructed in the past not to speak about the issue until it reaches the City Council for public discussion.

But during this petition round, backers of Save Our Canyon will be collecting signatures from surrounding cities as well, including Duarte, Deem said.

When asked about a potential voter initiative, Vulcan Materials officials didn't express an opinion but instead said they would continue with their public-awareness campaign.

"We will continue to reach out to the community so that a better future for Azusa Rock is possible," Priest said. "We believe the more residents learn about the plan, the more they will embrace it."
