Sequenom Launched Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Screening Test (SQNM)

(NASDAQ:SQNM) said Thursday it launched a genetic test, called the SensiGene Cystic Fibrosis Carrier Screening test, that determines if a person carries a mutation that can cause their children to have cystic fibrosis. The test uses Sequenom's MassARRAY platform and screens for 103 mutations and five genetic variants that are related to cystic fibrosis. The company said that roughly one in 30 Americans carries a cystic fibrosis gene mutation and that children inherit the disease when both parents have such a mutation. The American College of Medical Genetics recommends screening for 23 mutations, according to the company, but said that one in 17 carries would be missed by a scan only including those 23 mutations.
