ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept 17, 2009 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ -- ITWT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The following event advisory was issued today by the Water Environment Federation.

Who: The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the International Water Association (IWA) will join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and other partnering organizations to celebrate World Water Monitoring Day(TM) 2009. Speakers include:

-- Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.)
-- Brian van de Graaff, Meteorologist, Good Morning Washington and ABC7
        News at Noon
-- Michael Shapiro, Deputy Assistant Administrator for EPA's Office of
        Water
-- Nancy Myers, Chief of the USGS National Water Quality Assessment Program
-- Rebecca West, President of the Water Environment Federation

-- Frances Lucraft, Program Officer for the International Water Association

What: Officially observed each year on September 18th, World Water Monitoring Day (WWMD) is an international outreach program that builds public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world. Coordinated annually by WEF and IWA, the program engages communities in surveying the condition of their area rivers, streams, estuaries, and other water bodies. Approximately 200 students from Washington-area schools will monitor the Potomac River for a core set of water quality parameters including temperature, pH level, clarity and dissolved oxygen. In addition to the monitoring activities, the event will also feature educational table displays and demonstration stations hosted by program partners, local environmental organizations, and government agencies.

When: Friday, September 18, 2009, 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Where: Hains Point Park, 1090 Ohio Dr. SW, Washington, D.C. 20001

Why: Many communities around the world are unaware of the condition of their local water bodies and the direct and indirect impacts their actions have on the quality of these resources. Conducting simple monitoring tests teaches about some of the most common indicators of water health and encourages further participation in more formal citizen monitoring efforts. WWMD monitoring results are reported online, tabulated, and presented in a year-end report. Last year, more than 70,000 people in 70 countries participated in the program. WEF and IWA plan to expand participation to one million people in 100 countries by 2012. For more information, visit www.WorldWaterMonitoringDay.org.
