"The first survey I did was 40 years ago this fall," says Dr. Angus Reid. "Every interview was done face-to-face. That's how you collected data: very slowly. It took about two months to complete one survey. The development of telephone research in the '80s and '90s reduced the time a study took from months to weeks. Now, with the development of mobile and online technology, we can do a survey in a matter of minutes. We have more data than ever and we collect it much faster, but what hasn't changed is an understanding of the research process. The need for carefully thought-out questions and a skillful analysis of data is just as important today as it was 40 years ago."
Angus Reid founded the Angus Reid Group in the late 1970s, above a 7-Eleven store in Winnipeg. He sold that company to France's Ipsos SA - now commonly known as Ipsos Reid - in 2000. He joined his son Andrew Reid's company, Vision Critical, in 2004. Today, Vision Critical employs 300 people in offices around the globe, including New York, London, Vancouver, Chicago, San Francisco, Paris, Sydney and Toronto. It's considered one of the world leaders in global online panel research, as well as one of the fastest-growing technology companies in North America.
