"NEC Electronics America and Option developed this reference design blueprint to provide MID designers the solutions and support needed to get to production quickly and easily," said Tim Nguyen, general manager, Custom SOC Solutions Strategic Business Unit, NEC Electronics America. "The new reference design blueprint from NEC Electronics America and Option has been proven to work in the MID form factor and has been validated over numerous voice- and data-use cases. Utilizing this reference design blueprint will greatly accelerate the PMIC -- 2G/3G communications module integration process, helping customers get to market quickly."
"Both NEC Electronics America and Option are leaders in delivering solutions for the MID market," said Martin Croome, Vice President Global Marketing at Option. "By applying our individual technology expertise to a common reference design blueprint, we believe we have developed a best-in-class solution that meets the power efficiency and space requirements that are so critical to MID designers."
Robust MID Reference Design Blueprint Minimizes Power Consumption and Board Space
Developed in conjunction with Intel, the NEC Electronics PMIC solution combines power management, logic and user interfaces, plus audio and voice communications functions to maximize battery life, support high levels of integration and minimize board space for Internet and cellular network access, multimedia playback, navigation, gaming, social networking and other Web 2.0 and real-time Web applications.
Created specifically for ultra-mobile devices, the Option GTM501 series products are a radical evolution of the embedded high-speed broadband Internet access module. The small module is delivered in a space-efficient LGA package with optimum heat dissipation characteristics for small and thin devices. In HSUPA mode, the module delivers up to 5.76 megabits per second (Mbps), and in HSDPA mode, it delivers up to 10.2 Mbps. It is also multimode for high-speed data access and backward compatibility, and features 3GPP Type III Advanced Receiver Technology on three UMTS bands--for increased reliability in weak signal areas. And due to triple-band 3G and quad-band 2G support, the GTM501 series can be used anywhere in the world.
The combination of the NEC Electronics' Moorestown PMIC solution and the GTM 501L 3G module as the wireless modem provides several advantages for designers developing a MID based on the Intel Moorestown platform.
-- The PMIC solution provides all the power rails necessary to fully operate the wireless module in a tested bundle.
-- The PMIC provides a 32 kilohertz (kHz) clock to support the wireless module's sleep features.
-- The PMIC offers a full-featured audio codec/front-end to support the voice functionality of Option's modem.
