Nanticoke police arrested Jason Raymond Edwards, 27, and Tanya Lynn Karasinski, 23, when they were spotted leaving Weis Markets in Nanticoke after they allegedly attempted to steal a purse from a vehicle in front of Fetch's Market in Plymouth on Sept. 3.
The pair confessed to police, according to arrest records, that they took purses from other vehicles on the same day.
Edwardsville police recently charged Edwards with conspiracy to commit theft and Karasinski with theft. Edwards and Karasinski remained jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility for lack of $30,000 and $20,000 bail, respectively.
According to the recently filed charges:
A woman told Edwardsville police she left the Price Chopper supermarket in the West Side Mall and placed her purse on the front seat of her vehicle on Sept. 3. While she was loading groceries in the trunk, she claimed, a woman stole her purse and sped away in a Pontiac Grand Am.
Edwardsville police allege the theft was captured by the supermarket's surveillance cameras.
Wyoming police allege the pair are responsible for stealing a purse from a woman while she was loading groceries into her vehicle in front of Gerrity's Supermarket on Wyoming Avenue. Kingston Township police claim the duo conspired to steal a woman's purse near Thomas' Market on the Dallas Memorial Highway.
Edwards allegedly told police, according to arrest records, that he stole a vehicle and drove near shopping centers looking to steal purses for money to buy drugs. He said they targeted older women who were unable to chase them, arrest records say.
Nanticoke police said in arrest records that they found purses, wax paper used to package heroin, metal spoons and syringes in the stolen vehicle.
Karasinski recently waived her right to a preliminary hearing on the charges filed by Nanticoke police. She's facing charges of receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia in county court.
Edwards and Karasinski are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the charges filed by Wyoming police on Sept. 30 before District Judge Joseph Carmody in West Pittston.
A preliminary hearing on the charges filed by Edwardsville police is scheduled for Oct. 21 before District Judge Paul J. Roberts in Kingston.
They haven't been arraigned on the charges filed by Kingston Township police.
