DT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Orange Switzerland could partner with TDC subsidiary and mobile
competitor Sunrise to help it compete better against market leader
Swisscom according to France Teleom's CFO Gervais Pellissier in an
interview with Reuters. He declined to say if Orange is in talks with
Sunrise, but said a deal between the two bitter rivals could make
sense. Orange and Sunrise each have a roughly 20 percent share of the
Swiss market. Pellissier was responding to a question about whether he
sees any more opportunities for joint ventures or other combinations in
Europe after his company recently agreed to merge its British
operations with those of Deutsche Telekom in a joint venture.
Consolidation could also happen in countries such as Portugal, where
Orange has a minority stake in an operator, or in Belgium, where its
subsidiary Mobistar is the number two operator, but he suggested that a
Belgian mobile deal was less logical than in Switzerland. Pellissier
also said Orange would not look to expand into another Western European
market where it does not have any operations or investments as its main
focus outside of Europe remains in Africa and the Middle East including
Zimbabwe and Tanzania. He ruled out a move into South Africa or
Nigeria, where the investment required would be too big to justify the
risks involved with trying to control operations in those countries.
