At a news conference Friday with U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis, Compass Group North America and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers announced a deal aimed at improving the lives of migrant workers who pick Florida's tomatoes.
Compass Group will pay an additional 1.5 cents per pound for all the tomatoes they purchase and one penny of that will go directly to the workers. The Compass deal includes the participation of East Coast Growers and Packers, which has broken from the Florida Tomato Growers Exchange and agreed to participate in the deals.
Compass Group manages more than 10,000 accounts in the United States, including schools, corporate offices and hospitals. The agreement will apply to its operating companies, which include Restaurant Associates, Levy Restaurants, Chartwells and Wolfgang Puck Catering.
