"Our active prospect list is longer than it's ever been," said Gale Klappa, co-chairman of the M-7 and chief executive of Wisconsin Energy Corp. Klappa said the weak economy also could compel some to mistake the group's quietness for a lack of effort.
At its board meeting, the seven-county group released a list of its "active prospects," which are the companies that are considering retaining, expanding or importing operations in southeastern Wisconsin. Under its usual practice, the M-7 did not identify any of the companies except to label them in generic industry terms, such as "electronics manufacturing" or "water technology."
The group said it cannot identify companies without the publicity inviting unwanted attention to the companies as they weigh their decisions.
Of the 26 on the list, 17 are located outside the region and considering moving operations to the area. Nine already are located in southeastern Wisconsin, and the M-7 is working with them on strategies to remain or expand.
"The list is basically doubled," said Pat O'Brien, executive director of the M-7. The group hopes it is close to an expansion agreement with an existing Milwaukee County company, O'Brien said.
The M-7 said its studies have shown that the region can make its best industrial attraction arguments in the areas of power and automation controls; food and beverage manufacturing; water technologies; financial services; information technologies; and medical and diagnostic equipment.
