Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market plans as many as eight stores in the region, starting in 2011. Henry's Farmers Market, an Irvine-based subsidiary of Smart & Final Inc., says it wants to open three or four locations as soon as next year.
The two chains, which were founded by the same family, both characterize themselves as value-priced natural food stores of about 25,000 square feet.
That size is roughly half of a typical Raley's or Safeway store. It's similar to the footprint targeted by British-owned Fresh & Easy, which despite ongoing delays says it will open 20 stores from Vacaville to Lincoln. Locally based Good Eats, co-founded by Raley's heir Michael Teel, previously announced plans for at least five stores in the region.
The Sacramento metropolitan area has a total of about 215 supermarkets, according to market research firm Trade Dimensions International.
Sprouts President Doug Sanders was in Sacramento Thursday evaluating sites for new stores. The bankruptcies of chains like Circuit City and Linens 'N Things has left a large number of vacancies at the right size -- and price -- for his chain, Sanders said in an interview Friday.
"There's quite a bit of quality real estate available," he said. Sprouts now operates 38 stores in Southern California, Arizona, Texas and Colorado. It plans to open its first Northern California location in Sunnyvale next year, Sanders said.
Garrick Brown, research director in the Sacramento office of broker Colliers International Inc., said local rents for retail spaces around 25,000 square feet are down about one-third from their 2005 levels.
Henry's, which has 31 stores in Southern California, is also looking to expand broadly into both the Bay Area and Sacramento, Marketing Manager Aimee Della Bitta said.
Henry's was founded by Henry Boney, father of Sprouts Chairman Stan Boney and grandfather of Sprouts Chief Executive Shon Boney. The Boneys sold Henry's to Wild Oats Markets in 1999 and incorporated the Sprouts chain in 2001. Henry's was sold to Smart & Final in 2007.
