Rupert Hoogewerf, chief analyst of the institute, attributed Mr. Wang's leading position to his focus on technology application, new energy, innovation, and environmental protection, which are expected to help BYD reset its status in the world's automobile industry. In fact, Mr. Wang has seen its wealth hike CNY 29 billion in one year.
In 1995, Mr. Wang established BYD to produce rechargeable batteries and cellphones. The company went public on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong in 2002 with a 27.83% stake held by the chairman, and started its automaking business in the following year.
Warren Edward Buffett said earlier this year at BYD's shareholders meeting that Mr. Wang was the "real star", several months after the Oracle of Omaha bought a 10% in the company for HKD 1.8 billion.
