"Like similar events in London, New York and Paris, BC Fashion Week is a great outlet for designers to show their creations and their appreciation for fashion," says Shannon Yang, an instructor for the Fashion programs at VCAD. "It also provides opportunities for local designers and strengthens the local fashion industry as well."
Students in VCAD's Fashion programs study numerous aspects of the fashion industry, including fashion history, marketing and promotion, forecasting, styling and visual display and merchandising. They also gain experience in garment and apparel construction and learn about pattern drafting, textiles, fashion illustration, product development and collection design. By the end of the program, they possess a portfolio of original design work that includes promo kit and a four-piece themed collection.
"Fashion Week is a great opportunity for students to get a glimpse of how shows are produced and developed," says Yang. "It also gives students an opportunity to explore the different designs and further understand why they want this career path."
VCAD is currently accepting applications for its Fashion Design and Marketing and Merchandising for Fashion programs. The next round of programs starts on October 5, 2009. For more information, visit http://vancouver.vcad.ca.
