American TV to offer electronics recycling: Retailer teams with Waste Management on disposal option for idle devices

PEORIA, Sep 29, 2009 (Journal Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Used, obsolete or damaged TVs, computers, monitors or electronic products from Sony, LG, Zenith or Goldstar can be recycled for no charge at any of the 15 American TV outlets in the Midwest, including the Peoria store at 5801 W. War Memorial Drive.

Partnering with the recycling effort is Houston-based Waste Management Inc., a company with a goal of establishing a recycling center within 20 miles of 95 percent of the U.S. population.

Waste Management's subsidiary, WM Recycle America LLC, will break down the electronic components and recycle materials such as glass, metals and plastics.

"As the largest recycler in the nation, our goal is to reduce waste in the landfill and to make recycling easier," said Waste Management spokesman Bill Plunkett.

"The company is a resource manager, not just a waste manager," he said.

Waste Management has a goal of increasing its recycling effort from the 8 million tons it annually recycles at present to 24 million tons by 2020, said Plunkett.

The move is important because of the growing volume of electronic items being used by consumers, he said. "As we as a society get more wired, the volume of materials continues to grow," said Plunkett.

A study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency showed that in 2005, the nation's used or unwanted electronics amounted to about 2.2 million tons. Of that, between 1.5 million tons and 1.9 million tons wound up discarded in landfills.

American TV looks forward to participating in the recycling program, said Paul Kollberg, American TV vice president. "We are very pleased to be part of this program and to be able to offer our customers convenient, responsible recycling options for their old electronics," he said.

"Based on early response, there appears to be a great demand for this service among our customer base," Kollberg said in a news release.

While Sony, LG, Zenith and Goldstar are the only brands involved with the program, Teddy Hwang, president of LG Electronics USA, called for wider participation.

"We encourage other retail partners to join with LG Electronics and Waste Management to provide convenient collection sites for consumers," he said in a news release.
