AuthenTec recently tapped Masatoshi Morishita to take the helm of its Japanese subsidiary, known as AuthenTec KK, the company said.
A global player in consumer electronics, AuthenTec designs and produces fingerprint-recognition systems for personal computers, cell phones and other devices.
Morishita was formerly president of the Japanese unit of computer giant Advanced Micro Devices Inc., or AMD. Before that, he was president of ATI Technologies in Japan.
Morishita will oversee all aspects of AuthenTec Japan, including business development, sales, marketing and applications support, the company said.
He takes over for Kengo Kobayashi, who is retiring as AuthenTec Japan's top management executive. Kobayashi is still chairman of the unit.
AuthenTec's CEO Scott Moody said the addition of Morishita is a key move in the company's efforts to build market share in Japan.
"Japan has always been a key market for AuthenTec, particularly given its historical leadership as an early adopter of new and innovative technologies," he said in a written statement. "We look forward to further expanding our overall business in both cell phones and PCs in Japan."
