"We have always served two distinct audiences, a national one and a local one, and our desire for this new local homepage is for it to reflect what D.C.- area residents really want," said Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, The Washington Post's Local Editor.
"By doing this in beta, The Post will, for the first time, truly evolve the product as our readers use it and provide feedback," said Jonathan Krim, Local Innovations Editor.
The local homepage delivers a higher and more diverse degree of local coverage than ever before. In addition to breaking news, readers can get the latest traffic and commuter information; tailor weather forecasts based on zip code, and customize local news headlines based on where users live. A Going Out Guide entertainment planning calendar and other tools will help readers plan their daily living.
Found in the "Web Buzz" section of the homepage, the collection of news headlines from other local sites gives users easy access to the myriad of voices around the D.C.-area. In addition, users can find opinions from the Post's top local columnists, such as Robert McCartney, Petula Dvorak and John Kelly, and weigh in with their own voices.
Users can choose to set it as their main homepage when they visit washingtonpost.com.
