LOS ANGELES, Oct 01, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- KR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- As part of Foods 4 Less' "Giving Hope a Hand(R)" breast cancer awareness campaign, Food 4 Less, in partnership with key suppliers, has committed $235,000 in donations to support breast cancer initiatives in the local communities Food 4 Less serves.

This year's campaign will also feature two Food 4 Less Team Members who are breast cancer survivors. Maria Galvan and Ruth Williford share their survivor stories on the packaging of these items, which will be sold exclusively in Food 4 Less stores. Their stories are also featured on a special website: www.sharingcourage.com.

Williford, co-manager at the Lancaster Food 4 Less store at 44455 Valley Central Way, will be featured on packages of Keebler Rite Bite Cookies - Fudge. She shares her story to educate others.

"When you hear the word cancer you go through all sorts of feelings: fear, angst and most of all you wonder why me," said Williford, a resident of Lancaster. "My first thought was better me than my daughters. I was scared, but I was resigned to the fact that whatever happened would happen. If it was meant for me to survive, I would. I've been cancer free for 10 years.

"My advice to other women facing breast cancer is to not give up. Talk about your feelings and fears. It's best to get them out because somehow it frees you and helps you to better understand what you're going through."

Galvan, a cashier at the Food 4 Less store at 120 South Rainbow Boulevard in Las Vegas, will be featured as a life-size cutout that will be displayed in her store in southern Nevada and California. The cutout includes a message from Galvan encouraging women to get regular mammograms and perform regular self-examinations.

"I was always pretty good about doing my self-exams. But one day, I raised my arm and noticed something," said Galvan, a Las Vegas resident. "When I was diagnosed, I was scared. All of these awful things come to your mind. But the first thing my doctor told me was that I was going to be okay. Just those words alone were very powerful. I've gone through a lot, but I came through it with a smile.

"It's important for us women to keep up with our self-examinations. I want women to be aware. I have friends who say they don't want to go to the doctor because they're afraid they'll find something. But we can't avoid the issue. Your body tells you when you're sick. Listen to your body."

Williford and Galvan's inspirational stories and others can be found at www.sharingcourage.com, an interactive website dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness.

"We're proud to have two of our members, Maria Galvan and Ruth Williford, featured on products and signs sharing their personal journey as breast cancer survivors," said Dave Hirz, president of Food 4 Less Stores. "Maria's and Ruth's participation is so meaningful in so many ways, but perhaps the most important aspect is the awareness they're raising by encouraging others to take charge of their own health. Maria and Ruth are providing a tremendous service to families by sharing their story to educate others in a positive and effective way."

Food 4 Less' campaign once again features a store-wide sales promotion of popular items, many of which will feature exclusive, specially marked pink packaging. This year, 2,000 items, including Food 4 Less' own products and popular items from Food 4 Less' partners including Kellogg, Kraft, Pepsi, General Mills, Campbell's and Procter & Gamble, will be marked with special shelf tags to highlight their participation.

Last year, Food 4 Less provided more than $8 million in cash and in-kind donations to organizations focused on health, education, the fight against hunger, developing our youth, and the environment.

Food 4 Less operates 146 price-impact, warehouse-format supermarkets under the banners Food 4 Less in Southern California and Nevada, and Foods Co in Northern California, from its headquarters in Los Angeles. Food 4 Less is a division of The Kroger Co., (NYSE: KR), one of the nation's largest grocery retailers, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
