LOS ANGELES, Oct 01, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- KR | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- As part of Ralphs "Giving Hope a Hand(R)" breast cancer awareness campaign, Ralphs, in partnership with key suppliers, has committed $290,000 in donations to support breast cancer initiatives in the local communities Ralphs serves.

This year's campaign will also feature three Ralphs Team Members who are breast cancer survivors. Stacie Campbell, Robin Hutchison and Debbie Marin share their survivor stories on the packaging of these items, which will be sold exclusively in Ralphs stores. Their stories are also featured on a special website: www.sharingcourage.com.

Hutchison, a cashier at the Ralphs supermarket at 40545 California Oaks Road in Murrieta, will be featured on packages of Private Selection Savory Asian Frozen Vegetables. She shares her story to educate others.

"I was one of those people who assumed that it would never happen to me," said Hutchison, a resident of Murrieta. "But it did happen to me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. My battle with breast cancer has made me a stronger person and I now understand the meaning of the phrase 'don't sweat the small stuff,' and I don't anymore. My advice to other women facing breast cancer is to have faith, believe in yourself and stay positive even when things look their worst."

Marin, an administrative assistant at Ralphs headquarters in Compton, will be featured on boxes of Special K Fruit & Yogurt Cereal.

"I'm proud that I got through the most difficult time in my life with just a couple of scars, the rest is history," said Marin, who lives in Lomita. "I tell others that are going through breast cancer to stay informed and don't be afraid to ask questions. When I first went to the oncologist, I took friends with me and wrote down questions since I was still in shock."

In addition, Campbell, a cashier at the Ralphs on Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach, will be featured as a life-size cutout that will be displayed in her Ralphs store. The cutout includes a message from Campbell encouraging women to get regular mammograms.

"I was experiencing pain on my left side, which I thought was a pulled muscle. When the pain didn't go away, I made an appointment to have my first mammogram," said Campbell, a resident of La Jolla. "I was fortunate to have a great support system of family, friends, and co-workers during my treatment and recovery. My words of wisdom to anyone facing this disease are that breast cancer is not a death sentence. Learn all you can, because knowledge is power."

Hutchison's, Marin's and Campbell's inspirational stories and others can be found at www.sharingcourage.com, an interactive website dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness.

"On behalf of the entire Ralphs team, we thank our members for their willingness to share their journeys as breast cancer survivors with our customers and members," said Ralphs President Mike Donnelly. "It's an honor to have our great people featured on products and in displays in our stores as they encourage others to take charge of their own health."

Ralphs campaign once again features a store-wide sales promotion of popular items, many of which will feature exclusive, specially marked pink packaging. This year, 2,000 items, including Ralphs own products and popular items from Ralphs partners including Kellogg, Kraft, Pepsi, General Mills, Campbell's and Procter & Gamble, will be marked with special shelf tags to highlight their participation.

Last year, Ralphs provided more than $8 million in cash and in-kind donations to organizations focused on health, education, the fight against hunger, developing our youth, and the environment.

Ralphs Grocery Company was founded in 1873 and currently operates 259 supermarkets from its headquarters in Los Angeles. The company is a division of The Kroger Co., (NYSE: KR), one of the nation's largest food retailers, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. For more about Ralphs, please visit our web site at www.ralphs.com.
