The Toys "R" Us truck was on the transition road from the northbound 605-Freeway to the eastbound 10 when driver Tomas Gonzalez lost control around 2:40 a.m., according to Sgt. John Escobedo of the Baldwin Park California Highway Patrol office.
The transition is notorious for causing big rigs to tip and has caused at least six incidents since June 2008. The transition is scheduled for an overhaul that could begin as soon as 2010.
"It (the truck) overturned on its left side and continued sliding across the eastbound lanes striking the center divider," Escobedo said. "Upon impact it (the divider) gave way, dislodged and pieces were propelled into the number one and two lanes on the westbound side."
Some of the concrete pieces were as large as 12-feet long creating a number of other crashes, Escobedo added.
A Dodge pickup and a Ford pickup traveling west on the 10 both struck pieces of concrete. Then a Kenwood truck struck another piece of concrete, officials said.
Next the driver of a Toyota Corolla slammed on the brakes and ended up crashing into a Peterbilt tanker carrying 700 pounds of oil, Escobedo said.
Neither the oil or toys spilled out of the trucks.
Two drivers suffered mild-to-moderate injuries, Escobedo said.
It took Caltrans crews hours to clear the concrete debris and repair the divider. A tow truck company was also called out to the scene to turn the Toys "R" Us truck back on its wheels.
At one point the 10 east was closed. All lanes reopened at 7:30 a.m., officials said.
"With some of the collisions in the past speed has contributed," Escobedo said. "Can't tell if it was speed today but investigators are looking at it."
