MELBOURNE, Oct 02, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- NEM | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Australian government's proposed emissions trading scheme has been endorsed by an unlikely ally - one of the world's largest mining companies, Newmont Mining Corporation (ASX:NEM).

Newmont chief executive Richard O'Brien said nations had an obligation to reduce their carbon footprint and he was so far supportive of the government's moves towards dealing with the issue.

"I think the focus on having sort of users pay is probably a good thing to focus on," Mr O'Brien told journalists in Melbourne on Friday.

Mr O'Brien's views on Australia's proposed laws put him at odds with the Australian Minerals Council, which views the legislation as fundamentally flawed with no material effect on the level of global greenhouse gases.

Mr O'Brien said Newmont's major projects would not be affected by Australia's proposed scheme but marginal projects worth between $50 million and $100 million could be deferred if the legislation was passed.

"There might be some projects in Australia that we will defer because we have other projects that rise to a higher level ... those are more marginal projects," he said.

"I think that Australia is leading in an area where the rest of the world is going to come to, so in the long run I would suggest that to forestall global warming I think a lot of people are going to be adopting some kind of scheme.

"I think it will become a cost of our doing business across the world, which I think then competitively doesn't disadvantage Australia at all.

"I think, in some respects, having the desire to put that out there, that being trying to reduce the carbon footprint of companies in Australia, is a good thing," he said.

The government's proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme was rejected by the Senate in August and the opposition had been given until October 19 to present amendments.

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday delivered an ultimatum to his party to back his moves to negotiate on the legislation or dump him as leader.
