"We have seasonal burning to help improve air quality," said Chattanooga Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Bureau spokeswoman Amber McCorvie.
From the beginning of May until Sept. 30, residents are not allowed to do any commercial and residential burning due to a ban that took effect in 2005. Burning is banned during the summer because the season is a good mixing pot for air pollution, Mrs. McCorvie added.
But even when burning is allowed, officials urge residents to use caution to avoid the spread of fires.
The two main fire seasons are in late winter-early spring, before the leaves come out and right after the leaves fall, especially in forest areas, said Tim Doyle, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Morristown, Tenn.
The perfect condition for fires is when there are strong winds, low humidity and a prolonged period of dry weather, he said.
"Even though it has been dry in the last few days ... the soil is really wet right now, so the chances of fires getting out of control are not very good," he said.
Ms. McCorvie said approved burning days are based on air quality and whether forest conditions allow for burning.
Bureau officials also recommend people use alternatives to burning such as chipping, composting and recycling when possible.
And it's illegal to burn cardboard, paper, garbage, roofing materials or anything that's not natural, Mrs. McCorvie said.
