UCSF is a world leader in hyperthermia and has the largest and most versatile hyperthermia program on the West Coast, and its world- Radiation Oncology team has added the capabilities of the BSD-500 to its growing hyperthermia cancer treatment program, the Company noted in a release.
According to the UCSF hyperthermia website, the UCSF hyperthermia team tailors treatment to meet the needs of each individual patient. Information on its hyperthermia program can be found at: radonc.ucsf.edu/treatment_programs/hyperthermia.html. The UCSF Radiation Oncology team offers a approach to patient care and is known for providing a high level of care to cancer patients. UCSF is committed to the practice of evidence-based medicine, and the UCSF team continually finds new and better treatment options that improve patient outcomes in the treatment of cancer.
The BSD-500 Hyperthermia System is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to deliver therapeutic heat (hyperthermia) alone or in conjunction with radiotherapy to treat certain malignant tumors by the use of either external or interstitial application of energy. The BSD-500 has been used to treat patients with recurrent breast cancer. Previous studies have demonstrated that hyperthermia in conjunction with radiation significantly improved local tumor control in recurrent breast cancer patients and may improve survival in some patients.
Including the system sold to UCSF, the Company said that it sold seven BSD-500 Hyperthermia Systems during its fiscal year ended August 31, including five systems in the United States and two systems internationally. These domestic sales are further evidence of the growing use of hyperthermia therapy in the United States.
