John Constantine, Wisconsin Club's general manager, will "assume operational control" of Brynwood, the statement says. Brynwood currently contracts with Marcus Corp. to manage its facilities.
The statement also said the Wisconsin Club, 900 W. Wisconsin Ave., and Brynwood, 6200 W. Good Hope Road, have agreed to "provide mutual membership opportunities" in each club's facilities. The statement said additional information will be announced shortly, and a spokesman for the clubs declined to comment.
In 2005, executives from the two clubs discussed a possible merger.
At that time, the Wisconsin Club had 1,225 members, up from 400 members in 1995. The club has since grown to 1,300 members and in 2008 completed a $2.2 million remodeling of its downtown clubhouse, the former Alexander Mitchell mansion.
By contrast, Brynwood officials said their club had 280 members in 2004. Of that number, 170 had "full membership," which includes access to the 18-hole golf course. A 2008 article in the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle said Brynwood's membership had since increased, but club officials declined to provide a specific number.
Brynwood began in 1926 as a club for Jewish members who were barred from other private clubs, but has since sought to diversify its membership. The Wisconsin Club opened in 1891 and originally was called the Deutscher Club. It changed its name to the Wisconsin Club in June 1918, during the last months of World War I.
The Wisconsin Club's amenities include dining rooms, bars, a grand ballroom, and shuttle service to concerts and sport events. Brynwood includes four tennis courts, a swimming pool, a sand volleyball court and banquet facilities.
