She organized a group of employees that gave up their time to prepare and distribute food to help feed those who are less fortunate at the St. Vincent DePaul Kitchen in Wilkes-Barre from 9 a.m. -- 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
The 17-member group was just a fraction of the more than 32,000 people in 12 countries that participated in the company's 15th annual Global Volunteer Day.
"There are people who are less fortunate than ourselves. We are blessed to have our jobs and lots of people don't. We are blessed to have what we have and a lot of people don't have what we have. We need to be able to share our gifts and our talents with others," she said as to why she organized a group to come out for the third year to volunteer at the soup kitchen.
Some Prudential employees cut fruits and vegetables, while others rolled silverware in napkins when they arrived Saturday morning. As afternoon approaches, they began serving food and washing dishes.
Some employees brought family members to also assist. Senior Vice-President Sue Unvarsky brought her three nieces -- Briana Scorey, Lindsey Scorey, and Kayla Unvarsky.
Prudential employees are not required to volunteer. The company has a database set up to allow employees to record all their volunteer hours, even if the event is not company-sponsored.
"Prudential is very community oriented. There is definitely some encouragement, but we don't have any problems getting people to sign up and help," Unvarsky said.
She comes out to help the community because she said she was truly blessed and "it is the least I can do to truly help out the rest of the community."
The company's Community Volunteer Council coordinates year-round volunteer projects for employees to participate in.
Brown, who is a member of the council, said there are several other volunteer projects occurring within a two-week time span including -- the Lupus Walk and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light the Night.
