The design, titled Gesture, submitted by Go Jin-gwon, consists of a thin touch screen phone with various built-in sensors. The phone detects the user's hand motions and shows interfaces that match each movement. For example, if the user attempts to take a photo, a camera lens is displayed on the panel.
Fujitsu plans to release handsets that adopt the features of the prize-winning design by around 2011. It received some 2,000 submissions from the public in less than two months through the end of July. A total of 24 winning entries were selected, including one grand prize.
"We were able to gather designs based on viewpoints that are different from our perspective as a manufacturer," said Fujitsu Corporate Senior Vice President Hideyuki Saso.
Models of the Gesture phone and other winning designs are on display at Fujitsu's booth at Ceatec Japan 2009, the electronics and information technology trade show that is being held in the city of Chiba through Saturday .
