St. Joseph's Catholic College Selects Aruba Networks to Support Its Electronic Learning Environment

SUNNYVALE, CA, Oct 07, 2009 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- ARUN | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Aruba Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), a global leader in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions, today announced that St. Joseph's Catholic College has deployed an Aruba Wi-Fi network throughout its Swindon, UK campus. The school recently relocated to a new GBP 21million purpose-built facility and needed secure wireless access for its teaching staff, students and campus guests. St. Joseph's selected Aruba based on its ability to effectively manage numerous mobile devices, integrate wireless security, and provide simple guest access for visitors.

"Staff and students work most effectively when there is unfettered access to the information they need, and our new Aruba wireless network makes that possible," said Steve Harlow, Building and Systems Manager for St. Joseph's Catholic College. "Every teacher at St. Joseph's has been provided with his or her own Wi-Fi enabled laptop which is used for lesson preparation and to support teaching in class. The wireless network must therefore be fully operational and secured at all times, and allow roaming around the building as teachers and students use laptops in all areas of the college. The Aruba solution does this perfectly. We selected Aruba because it offered the most secure and dependable wireless network -- in other words, it was a far better solution than the other leading vendors we considered. Moreover, it was also the most cost-competitive solution presented to us."

The new school building is situated in a residential area and as such, the network is potentially exposed to the threat of wireless intrusion attempts. St. Joseph's therefore mandated the use of a secure wireless architecture that could simultaneously mitigate the risk of intrusion while still supporting a mobile environment in which staff and students could roam.

"Since we commissioned the Aruba network, we have seen 100% up-time and no successful intrusion attempts," continued Harlow. "In addition to electronic learning applications, we also use the Aruba network to control our main A/V system -- including projectors, screens, lights, curtains and microphones -- something possible only because of the wire-like stability of the network. We are now deploying new cost-saving applications over the network, too, including a wireless student registration system and Remote Access Points that allow us to securely access the network remotely from home or while traveling."

To deliver a best-in-class wireless experience, Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) software lowers deployment and maintenance costs by automating site surveys and using infrastructure-based controls to optimize the performance of Wi-Fi clients in real-time. Acting on their own, Wi-Fi clients do not always work cooperatively with other clients, or select the optimal band, channel, and access point. These issues are exacerbated in settings with densely packed users such as lecture halls and libraries. By controlling how Wi-Fi clients interact, ARM ensures that data, voice, and video applications have sufficient network resources, including airtime, to operate properly.

Aruba's Remote Access Point (RAP) technology is designed to deliver the enterprise network to remote locations and mobile users, offering the security of a VPN without the overhead or expense of managing client software. Ideally suited for traveling employees, telecommuters, and branch offices, RAP uses Ethernet or broadband cellular to network users anywhere.

"In schools, as in enterprises, users have come to expect reliable network access from wherever they're working, it being incumbent upon the network to unobtrusively overcome any impediments," said Bob Vickers, Aruba's UK sales director. "ARM technology is the invisible hand that adjusts client and network behavior to make Aruba's Wi-Fi networks work so effectively. St. Joseph's is an example of how easy to deploy and reliable Wi-Fi can be."
