Perry Clear-Creek Fire Protection District and Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jeff Calabrese said two firefighters on their way to a scene to provide mutual aid to Van Buren fire early this morning crashed their tanker into a tree. The accident happened on Rockport Road south of Ind. 37.
Tanker 11 caught fire, Calabrese said. A reader photo submitted to the H-T via e-mail at 5:39 a.m. shows quite a blaze on Rockport. Responding emergency vehicles can be seen approaching the crash site.
The two firefighters were back at Station 11 at 8 a.m. They were treated and released from Bloomington Hospital and are fine, Calabrese said.
The tanker is a total loss, he said. Asked how many tankers the fire department has, Calabrese said, "One, now."
It will take time, but he believes the truck will be replaced.
Calabrese said the crash is being investigated by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. "We don't do our own investigation," he said of the cause of the crash.
An initial crash report is set to be completed today, according to the sheriff's office.
Van Buren fire chief Chuck Hill said firefighters fought a blaze in the 5600 block of West Duvall Road. An RV in a garage attached to a house caught fire, he said. No one was hurt, but the RV is likely a total loss. The house sustained minor damage, Hill said.
Area residents woken by a loud boom this morning heard the air packs in the Perry-Clear Creek tanker blow up, Hill said.
Firefighters strap air packs on their backs before entering smoke-filled structures.
