The electrochemical hydrogen separator, or EHS, system separates pure hydrogen from gas internally generated by a fuel cell, the company said. The hydrogen can be used in industrial and transportation applications.
The award came from the Defense Department's Engineer Research and Development Center-Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, Ill. The research and development center is the Army Corps of Engineers' integrated R&D organization.
The EHS research will contribute to developing FuelCell Energy's DFC-H2 product. The DFC-H2 integrates an EHS system with the company's Direct FuelCell power plant to produce clean electricity, heat and pure hydrogen.
A 300-kilowatt power plant combined with an EHS system would produce 300 kilowatts of power and up to 300 pounds of hydrogen per day, the company said. If successful, this combination would produce hydrogen more economically than other methods.
Conventional methods of separating hydrogen rely on a complex separation step that utilizes mechanical compression; FuelCell Energy's EHS technology has no moving parts and does not use compression, the company said. Because EHS technology potentially offers higher reliability and better efficiency, it would require only half the energy used by conventional hydrogen separation methods.
"This award recognizes our expertise in electrochemical separation technology and the opportunity to further develop our fuel cell technology," said Christopher Bentley, who heads FuelCell Energy's government research and development operations. "It also confirms the Department of Defense's continued commitment to support the development of innovative technologies."
The $1.5 million program will span 20 months and will lay the groundwork for a field demonstration, the company said.
