Charlotte Simmons, 1916-2009: Supporter of Lyric Opera, Lake Forest College

Oct 08, 2009 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ZZHOJ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Charlotte Simmons, a Southern belle whose many stories included tales of an early courtship with football legend Paul "Bear" Bryant, presided over lavish parties at her Lake Forest home where the well-heeled mingled with principals of her pet causes, the Lyric Opera and Lake Forest College.

One of just five women to serve on the Women's Board and the main Board of the Lyric, and a founder of the Lake Forest College Women's Board, Mrs. Simmons, 93, died of heart failure Sunday, Oct. 4, in her home, said her son Barton Goodwin.

An Alabama native, Mrs. Simmons arrived in Chicago in 1957, settling in Lake Forest with her first husband, Jack Goodwin, who ran a local investment office. She quickly became chummy with the who's who of local society and got involved with organizations including the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

In 1964, after a divorce and second marriage to Richard Simmons, a founding partner of the investment banking firm of Blunt, EllisandSimmons, she became close with Lyric founder Carol Fox.

An opera fan since she was little and her mother took her to performances in Atlanta, Mrs. Simmons became a member of the Women's Board of the Lyric and was president from 1972 to 1974. She joined the company's main board of directors in 1976 and was named a life director in 2008.

In 1971 she led the formation of a women's board for Lake Forest College, which worked to foster relations between the school and city.

"The college had become somewhat divorced from the community," said Eugene Hotchkiss, the college's president from 1970 to 1993. "She was a wonderful hostess. You couldn't just pal around with who you knew."

Mrs. Simmons oversaw extravagant soirees. Everything in her house was just so -- she studied interior design at Finch College in New York -- and conversation never lagged.

She could hold a room rapt with stories she'd spool out in a languid Southern drawl her many years in Lake Forest failed to erode.

"She used to say, 'A good Southern story is one that grows and ages well,' " her son said.

"Who else did you know who danced with King Farouk?" Hotchkiss said. "And that one was true."

In 1991 she was awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Lake Forest College.

The former Charlotte Head was born in Tuscaloosa, and after studying at Finch, she received a degree from the University of Alabama. There she dated two classmates who went on to become legends, Bryant and receiver Don Hutson.

Richard Simmons died in 1989.

Survivors include another son, Andy Goodwin; a daughter, Charlotte Tieken; two stepdaughters, Deedee Ehrhard and Ginny Hardy; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services are set for 3 p.m. Thursday in the Church of the Holy Spirit, 400 E. Westminster Road, Lake Forest.
