Alphion chairman, president and CEO Dr. Bharat P. Dave said. "This initial contract is the first phase of BSNL's planned multi-year deployment of GPON networks and our deliveries of Alphion equipment, the first GPON shipments in India, are well underway."
Orckit is an equipment vendor to Alphion, so Alphion's announcement means that Orckit will likely soon make an announcement of its own. Market sources believe that it will receive initial orders amounting to $16 million, and that the set-up of this stage will begin in a few months.
BSNL is a Tier-1 telecommunications provider. It chose two equipment suppliers for the network it is building in western and southern India: Nokia Siemens Networks, and Indian government company ITI Ltd., which is the contractor that will build and supply the network. Alphion and Orckit will jointly supply equipment to ITI. Alphion's website lists Orckit's products.
Last month, Orckit announced that it had received a $4 million order as part of the tender, but did not disclose the buyer. In view of Alphion's announcement today, Orckit's order presumably came from Nokia Siemens Networks.
Orckit's share closed at $3.92 on Nasdaq yesterday. The share rose 0.2 percent on the TASE today to NIS 14.64.
