Oct 08, 2009 (Contra Costa Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NATH | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Phantom of the Opera is looking for love at New York's Coney Island amusement park. Will he recapture his Christine -- or settle for a Nathan's Famous hot dog?

Andrew Lloyd Webber is revisiting his biggest triumph for "Love Never Dies," a new musical featuring characters from "The Phantom of the Opera," the longest running musical on Broadway.

"I don't regard this as a sequel; it's a stand-alone piece," the composer said Thursday at a press event in which Ramin Karimboo and Sierra Boggess, playing the Phantom and Christine, sing a song from the new show. "Love Never Dies" is due to open in London in March and in New York in November 2010.

The new musical picks up a decade after the original's circa-1912 conclusion with the Phantom trading his customary hideout beneath the Paris opera house for a Coney Island freak show.

"There's unfinished business," Lloyd Webber said Thursday. "Christine goes off with this boring guy." He said he wanted to set the piece at Coney Island because, at its turn-of-the-century heyday, it was "the eighth wonder of the world. Think of Vegas and then triple it."

VAMPIRE WEEKEND IN LAFAYETTE?: Vampire Weekend emerged as one of the hottest new bands on the planet last year. So with New York quartet set to tour California next month to introduce fans to new songs, you'd expect VW to hit one of the usual concert halls ... the Fillmore, the Warfield, or.

...

Lafayette's Town Hall Theatre. Yes, VW will perform 9 p.m. Nov. 7 at the tiny Lafayette theater, which tends to host about as many rock concerts as your average Christian Science reading room. According to promoter Another Planet Entertainment, the band specifically requested a small venue in Contra Costa County because its new album is titled "Contra." The band's also booked for 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Catylyst in Santa Cruz. Tickets for both shows go on sale at noon today and cost $20 each. Contact 800-745-3000 or www.apeconcerts.com.

Oh! Lady be good vibrations: Talk about two great tastes you wouldn't think would go together -- Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson has been given permission to rework unfinished pieces of music by George Gershwin, who died five years before Wilson was born.

The Gershwin estate gave Wilson access to the rare material, described by George's great-nephew Todd Gershwin as a collection of several dozen song fragments, ranging from "a few bars to some almost finished songs and everything in between."

The resulting music will be included on a solo album where Wilson also will cover classic Gershwin songs. Gershwin's songbook includes "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Rhapsody in Blue" and "Summertime." His brother Ira provided lyrics.

YO! ADRIEN?: Scrump-tilly-icious Adrien Brody apparently is following in the footsteps of another Best Actor Oscar winner, Nicolas Cage.

Brody will take over the Arnold Schwarzenegger role in Robert Rodriguez's planned reboot of the "Predator" franchise. The Hollywood Reporter calls Brody's role "a man who ends up inheriting the mantle of leader."

Brody did do a Men's Health magazine cover (and not as the "before" portion of a Charles Atlas ad) and looked comely enough with his shirt off in "King Kong." We're more worried about his acting credibility taking the same hits Cage's has since the latter took the primrose path of action-film dalliance (and paychecks).

Others in the cast of the reboot "Predators" include Topher Grace, Danny Trejo and Alice Braga.

OH, THE HORROR: There's great gnashing of teeth in the Twitterverse because Miley Cyrus has deleted her Twitter account.

Don't blame papa Billy Ray. It's her new beau who doesn't approve.

"FYI Liam doesn't have a Twitter and he wants ME to delete mine with good reason," she posted before pulling the plug. Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is her co-star in "The Last Song."

Of course, she could just pull on a blond wig and start Tweeting again under the name Hannah Montana.

BLUNT FORCE: Emily Blunt is a late addition to the star-studded lineup at the 32nd Mill Valley Film Festival. Blunt will attend Oct. 18 in support of her closing night film, "The Young Victoria," at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center.

Blunt, 26, fiancee of "The Office's" John Krasinski, has the title role of the monarch who took the British throne at age 18. She also has appeared in "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Sunshine Cleaning."
