Brookstone rolls past Stewart County

Oct 10, 2009 (Columbus Ledger-Enquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- BKST | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- By the time Brookstone's defense took the field Friday night against Stewart County, the Cougars already had a 20-0 lead on their way to a 53-12 win Friday night.

The Cougars took the opening drive and scored on a 9-yard pass from Jake Howard to Brian Vogler. Stewart County proceeded to fumble the next two kickoffs. Both turnovers led to Brookstone touchdowns.

Things didn't get any better for the Knights when Brookstone's defense took the field.

Unable to mount more than one scoring drive, the Knights watched as the Cougars ran and passed to a 41-6 lead at the half.

Howard was four of nine, throwing for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Joey Lewis ran for 74 yards and three touchdowns. Madison McCluskey ran for 88 yards, two touchdowns and caught another score in the rout.Coach Blair Harrison was pleased with the Cougars' performance,

"We played very well tonight," he said. "We took care of the football and kept our defense off the field. We've had some adversity. It was time for us to have a game like this."

The Cougars face undefeated Marion County at home next week. Harrison said his team is looking forward to the challenge.

"We are going to get after it in practice," Harrison said. "We are going to work on eliminating mistakes."

SMITHS STATION, Ala. -- Smiths Station quarterback Michael Nolin passed and receiver Rod Austin hooked up for three touchdowns and Marcus Bilbrew ran in three of his own, but Enterprise secured a victory with a short touchdown run with less than three minutes to play.

Enterprise's Willie Curry tacked on the 5-yard score with 2:31 remaining and the defense held Smiths Station scoreless in the closing minutes. Curry finished with four touchdowns, including one on a 95-yard run near the end of the third quarter.

Smiths Station (2-5, 0-5 Region 3 Class 6A) and Enterprise (4-3, 2-3) traded scores through the first two quarters and went to halftime tied 21-21. But Enterprise added two scores in the third and scored again on Curry's short fourth-quarter run.
