HACKENSACK, New Jersey, October 12, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- NSTC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Ness Technologies (NASDAQ: NSTC and TASE: NSTC), a global provider of information technology services and solutions, today announced the launch of two systems that help fight terror and crime in urban areas, at ISDEF - Israel Defense, the international army and police exhibition, being held October 12-14, 2009, in Tel Aviv, Israel. The first system is ASM - Area Smart Monitoring, and the second is The Sixth Sense - a system that identifies suspicious persons in an urban scene.

ASM builds intelligence situation pictures for urban areas. The system is based on a real-time data fusion and sensor management engine that integrates information acquired in real-time with analyzed intelligence information. The system monitors urban areas and helps enhance urban security, creating a real-time urban situation picture that provides critical information to homeland security, law enforcement and public safety agencies. ASM identifies and tracks suspicious activities of individuals or groups, and helps prevent terror and criminal acts, as well as capture suspects after an event has occurred. The system generates alerts when suspected activities are detected.

The real-time information is received from various sources, such as cellular location systems, license plate recognition systems, video cameras equipped with automatic content analysis algorithms, GPS location systems and human observers.

ASM can work in two modes of operation: collection mode and command and control mode. In collection mode, the system collects, integrates and displays information gathered on a person, a group or a site, enabling the user to create a routine behavior pattern. In command and control mode, ASM integrates in real-time the data received from the real-time sources with the analyzed intelligence data.

The Sixth Sense is an automatic system that alerts the end user to abnormal patterns of motion. A scene is surveilled by video cameras. All moving objects (e.g., humans, animals, vehicles) are automatically detected and tracked. Each trajectory is carefully examined in order to determine whether it is normal or not. Two types of alerts are produced by the system. The first is based on user definitions, such as loitering, running, abrupt direction changes, etc. The second is based on system self-learning. It accumulates statistics during the learning stage and applies them to each incoming trajectory during the recognition stage.

The Sixth Sense can also be integrated within the ASM as a source of information immediately and directly contributing to the urban situation picture generated by the ASM. Sixth Sense successfully deals with crowded urban areas where human operators can hardly perceive and absorb all the incoming information. In such situations the system draws the operator's attention to specific events in the scene. The system is also used in the areas where human supervision is not available 24 hours a day.

"Terror and crime in urban areas are a growing threat to public safety in many countries. ASM and The Sixth Sense enable continuous monitoring and information collection, both in routine and emergency times, in order to spot unusual behavior and identify potential threats," said Michael Zinderman, President, Technologies & Systems Group (TSG), Ness Technologies. "These systems are another milestone in our portfolio of innovative systems serving military, homeland security, law enforcement and emergency agencies."
