No more excuses. It 's time International Speedway Corp. and NASCAR admit what has been painfully obvious to everyone: Two races won 't work at Auto Club Speedway.
This fall, the track had a better date, cooler weather and a race in the Chase. And still the turnout was pathetic.
Why keep rewarding an area whose fans simply don 't wish to show up instead of holding a race someplace where they'll fill the stands?
I guess that makes too much sense.
Since Jimmie Johnson 's win at Dover, an air of inevitability has overtaken this Chase. And Johnson didn 't even have the points lead after that one.
Now, Johnson has two wins in four Chase races, the points lead and his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon all but conceded the title on Sunday should he stay out of trouble.
Another strong run by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and another bad finish not of his doing. I 'm sure Earnhardt is buoyed about running well the last couple of weeks, but I 'm just as sure it 's depressing when he looks at the final rundown from the race.
Key moments
Lap 62
During pit stops under the first caution, Kyle Busch - suffering from the flu - gets out of his car and is replaced by David Gilliland.
Lap 164
Tony Stewart is flagged for speeding on pit road during a green-flag stop. He falls as low as 30th, but rebounds for a fifth-place finish.
Lap 190
While racing for the lead, Jimmie Johnson gives Juan Pablo Montoya a push and Montoya plows into Denny Hamlin, who was attempting to block Montoya 's advance. Hamlin then slams into the pit road wall and is out of contention.
Lap 239
Following a caution, Jeff Gordon gets a jump on Johnson and Montoya and takes the lead only to see Johnson take it back five laps later.
Lap 248
One chance left for Gordon to get back around Johnson on a restart, but Johnson pulls away from everyone on the way to his second victory in the Chase.
