Hinchey Presents Overdue Military Medals to Widow of Local World War II Veteran

MNCOF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Monticello, NY - Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today presented eight overdue military medals to Catherine Sterling of Glen Spey, New York. Mrs. Sterling is the widow of Wilson B. Sterling, whoserved in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1946 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on the naval base. The medal presentation took place in Congressman Hinchey's Monticello District Office, which is located in the Office of Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther.

"These medals have great meaning because they represent the sacrifices and tremendous courage of Wilson Sterling and all of the veterans from World War II," Hinchey said. "As our nation continues to face challenges abroad, we draw strength from the examples and accomplishments of veterans from past wars such as Wilson Sterling. We are forever grateful for his service to our nation, and I am deeply honored to present these medals to Mrs. Sterling in recognition of her husband's service to our country."

Wilson Sterling passed away two and a half years ago and never received the medals he earned for his service in the Navy in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The medals earned by Wilson Sterling that Hinchey presented to Catherine Sterling were the following:

* Navy Good Conduct Medal

* World War II Victory Medal

* American Defense Service Medal (with Fleet Clasp)

* Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal

* European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal

* Navy Honorable Discharge Lapel Button

* Honorable Service Label Button

* American Campaign Medal

Hinchey was joined by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and other county and local officials for the presentation.
