The move is part of a broader companywide restructuring that also includes moving 20 to 25 high-end research, technology and marketing jobs from its plant in Tulsa, Okla., to Brown Deer, company Chief Executive Richard Meeusen said in a telephone interview.
The maker of water meters had been leasing plant space in Mexico for a decade before putting the finishing touches on a company-owned Mexican production facility, which it recently opened. Meeusen said the company spent much of this year studying ways to optimize work in the company's North American factories.
The Brown Deer staff recently received notice of the changes, which won't take place until the middle of next year, the CEO said. The relatively high average age of the Brown Deer workforce could lead to enough attrition before June to reduce the number of layoffs that are necessary.
Badger Meter has about 500 employees at the corporate headquarters in Brown Deer, including 210 production workers at the adjacent factory. It also has some 1,200 workers worldwide, with production in Tulsa, the Czech Republic, and Stuttgart, Germany.
Although the company is best known for making water meters, Meeusen has carved a prominent leadership role in the Milwaukee region's efforts to create a hub of water technology and research.
Saying the transfer of jobs from Tulsa is an endorsement for the metro Milwaukee water industry, he noted that his company is moving jobs from Oklahoma, which is regarded as a low-tax state, to Wisconsin, which is regarded as a high-tax state.
