Kate Hanni, executive director and founder of FlyersRights.org, sued Delta Air Lines and Metron Aviation Inc, of Dulles, Virginia, claiming that her e-mails and those of at least two reporters were obtained by the defendants suspiciously.
According to Hanni, she learned from America Online that her personal e-mail files were redirected to an unknown location, as well as donor lists, spreadsheets and other information.
Hanni's lawsuit alleges that the e-mail hacking started in 2008 and continued this year while Hanni was involved in communications with an airline industry consultant who analysed airline delays for the federal US government.
Dr Frederick J Foreman, the consultant, provided a sworn affidavit that he was authorised to share publicly available data with Hanni and news reporters, but was terminated by Metron on 25 September when Delta Air Lines officials learned of the communications.
