Steel Dynamics is a fast-growing mini-mill steelmaker and metals recycler based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 2009 SDI joined the Fortune 500 list of top U.S. industrial companies, ranked at No. 318, and listed No. 3 in terms of 5-year revenue growth. Net sales for 2008 were $8.1 billion, generating net income of $463 million. These results include OmniSource Corporation, a metals recycling company acquired in 2007. SDI employment was 6,650 at year-end 2008.
SDI operates five electric-furnace mini-mills producing a wide range of carbon steel products. Flat-rolled steel, SDI's original steel product, accounted for 56 percent of the company's steel shipments in 2008, the remainder being "long products" (bars and beams). The company employs state-of-the-art technology in its modern, automated steelmaking operations, and achieves high productivity by rewarding employees with incentive-based compensation, stock options, and other benefits. SDI is among the most profitable American steel companies in terms of profit margins and operating profit per ton. In 2008 Steel Dynamics shipped 5.6 million tons of steel and has a production capacity of about 7 million tons per year.
Upon acquiring OmniSource Corporation, Steel Dynamics became one of the nation's largest scrap metals processors. Fort Wayne-based OmniSource operates scrap collection and processing facilities at more than 70 locations across the eastern U.S., including shredders operating at 11 sites, and has become a major ferrous scrap supplier to SDI's Indiana steel mills.
