Brianna Culp, a sophomore from Springfield, Ill., was pronounced dead shortly after being taken by ambulance to Henry County Health Center.
According to BNSF spokesman Steve Forsberg, the crew on the 135-car coal train said the woman, who was identified in the company's initial report as a pedestrian, was seen "sitting between the rails on the main track" just west of the Carnathan Road crossing near Mount Pleasant.
The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. Culp was a member of the school's women's soccer team.
"The individual apparently didn't attempt to get out of the way," Forsberg said. "She was just sitting between the rails."
Lt. Ron Archer of the Mount Pleasant Police Department did not say whether authorities are considering the incident a case of suicide.
"We don't know until we get the autopsy to make that determination," he said.
IWC President Jay Simmons expressed his condolences.
"All of us at the college are deeply saddened by the death of our student and classmate, Brianna Culp," he said in a statement. "Our immediate concern is for her family and friends as they face this terrible loss. Our focus now is to work with students and staff to help them through this tragedy."
Simmons said the college's Office of Student Life is providing counseling services for students, faculty and staff.
College spokeswoman Martha Potts-Bell said there will be a campus memorial service scheduled once funeral arrangements are made.
Meanwhile, the BNSF crew will undergo two levels of counseling, according to Forsberg.
All train crews involved with an accident involving serious injuries or death are required to undergo two levels of counseling, he said.
The first will be peer counseling from other crew members who have experienced similar incidents. Then a professional physiological counselor will work with the crew.
"It's obviously not only emotionally traumatic for the victims and their families but also to the train crew," Forsberg said. "It's an unfortunate tragedy, and your heart has to go out to the young person and the family."
