Dr. Dewayne Andrews, dean of the OU College of Medicine, said the newly expanded OU Clinical Skills Education and Testing Center can train up to 10 surgeons per week to use robots made by California-based Intuitive Surgical. The $1.8 million addition was funded by the University Hospitals Authority and Trust. "We are proud to be at the forefront of robotic surgery training," Andrews said. "We fully expect for the demand for this type of training and centers to continue to grow." Dr. Joan Walker, a gynecological oncologist at the OU Cancer Institute, said robot-assisted surgeries are becoming the norm. Working from computer consoles, surgeons can robotically insert tools into small holes in the patient's body and maneuver through tight spaces. That means less trauma to tissue, less bleeding and faster healing. Chris Carllson of Intuitive Surgical said OU is one of two academic training centers in the United States using the robots. "We were wowed when we came here," he said. "We will have people coming internationally to train at this center."
