The move displaces 28 employees in Sunbury and another 27 at a Williamsport facility, spokesman Curtis L. Etherly Jr. said Tuesday, but he said hopes are those employees will be able to transfer to the Harrisburg facility or elsewhere within the company.
Etherly said the decision to close the Sunbury facility came because its location in a 1963 building on North Second Street allowed no room for expansion.
"From the standpoint of being able to expand the capacity of the warehouse ... both of those properties are severely constrained," he said. "Those warehouses can't keep up with the growing demand we see in the region."
Mark LaBorne, eastern Pennsylvania market unit vice president, said: "This closure enables us to consolidate and align our sales and distribution operations more efficiently with larger and more up-to-date facilities in the region."
The closure will be effective Nov. 20.
Coca-Cola's consolidation plans also call for a small warehouse facility to be located in the Milton Industrial Park. Etherly did not know how many it might employ.
"It would be difficult to say," he said. "But these facilities typically employ a smaller complement of employees."
Etherly said deliveries will be prepared and loaded out of Harrisburg, while trailer-loaded product will be maintained for pickup in Milton.
"We think it gives us a better footprint from which to operate more efficiently," he said.
Coca-Cola is a popular contributor to many Sunbury events, such as the Love 'n Care Street Fair and the Sunbury Celebration.
Etherly said the company has every intention of maintaining its philanthropic efforts in the city.
"That will most certainly continue in terms of our corporate philanthropic efforts, in terms of our community support and sponsorships," he said. "We want to continue to maintain an active and vigorous presence in the Williamsport and Sunbury communities."
