Anticipating adoption in digital SLR (single-lens reflex) cameras, Seiko Epson will target annual shipments of at least 500,000 units in fiscal 2010.
The high-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistor color panel offers camera manufacturers an alternative to existing optical viewfinders, which require mirrors and pentaprisms. Its technology was originally developed for projectors and makes smaller, thinner cameras possible.
Seiko Epson has installed a production line for the color panel at its Suwa Minami plant in Fujimi-machi, Nagano Prefecture. Depending on demand, it may also begin mass-producing the panel at its Chitose plant in Hokkaido Prefecture.
