United Airlines allegedly operated a Boeing 737 aircraft on over 200 flights between 10 February and 28 April 2008 when the aircraft was not in an airworthy condition.
On 28 April 2008 the 737 returned to Denver after shutting down an engine due to low oil pressure indications. United Airlines mechanics later found, during teardown of the engine, that two shop towels, instead of required protective caps, has been used to cover openings in the oil sump area when maintenance was carried out in December 2007.
The carrier's maintenance procedures require the use of protective caps or covers on all components that could be affected by the entry of foreign materials.
