School board trustees, on behalf of students and teachers, presented a plaque to Wenert Trich of Longview, a 1950 SHS graduate who donated thousands of dollars to help defray student costs for dual-credit classes at Kilgore College.
Stacey Bryce, superintendent, said the money has been used to purchase textbooks and during the past three semesters about $25,000 worth of books have been bought.
"Mr. Trich has just been a big help to our students and the families here at Sabine ISD," Bryce said. "Thanks to his generosity, our students do not have to purchase any college books for their courses."
Bryce said 57 seniors and juniors are taking dual-credit classes on the SHS campus this semester. Courses taught by KC instructors include history, English, music appreciation and calculus, among others.
"Our students can easily graduate, without ever stepping off this campus, with 27 hours of college credit and they get their high school credits too," Bryce said.
He said the kids understand and appreciate Trich's financial support because of the savings to their parents.
"They know the prices of those college textbooks and it's a tremendous help," Bryce said.
Trich was given a plaque and around 60 thank-you cards from students, which he apparently began reading before the presentation.
"Some of these will make you cry. They are very heart moving," Trich said.
He credited Scotti Wood, SHS dual-credit counselor, and Dr. Bill Holda, KC president, as "the brains behind the whole thing."
Trich, who graduated from KC in 1952 and went on to earn a geology degree from The University of Texas at Austin, donated $100,000 to KC. Of that donation, $50,000 was designated to improve science labs in the KC-Longview North Building; $30,000 was to fund educational materials for the East Texas Oil Museum's "Got Oil Cafe"; and $20,000 was to fund dual-credit expenses for students from Trich's high school alma mater.
After college, Trich worked for various oil companies in exploration and development, eventually deciding that he could be more efficient as an independent. He retired as a geologist in the 1980s, but continues to be an independent oil and gas operator and a passionate fundraiser for the Sabine Ex-Students Association.
