Commissioners tentatively agreed during a work session Wednesday to pay Chevron Energy Solutions Co. $1,981,455 over 20 years to lower energy consumption and reduce operation and maintenance costs in county buildings.
The company improves efficiency through improvements to indoor lighting, water and control systems, heating and air-conditioning, electrical infrastructure, thermal heat-storage recovery and building shells.
Commissioners will vote on the contract at their regular meeting Monday.
"The contract seems awfully large, but it will be paid for with the energy savings," County Commission Chairman David Seibert said after the work session. "It works by changing out lights, setting the temperature so no one can change it and lowering water use."
Athens City Schools has employed a similar energy-savings program and officials are pleased with the results.
A school superintendent in Pennsylvania, Dr. Edwin Sponseller, praised Chevron's work at its schools.
"The company's recommendations have led to a better learning environment for our students and saved us $420,000 a year in energy bills -- money we're putting back into education in the classroom," he stated on Chevron's Web site www.chevronenergy.com
The county hopes to see similar results.
Chevron has already performed an energy audit for the county to determine the cost of installing more energy efficient lighting, bathroom fixtures, thermostat controls and other measures.
The next step is for the commission to implement those recommendations.
When Chevron completes the upgrades, it will provide the county with a measurement of how much it is saving.
