PowerRating -- 10/16/2009 - The FDA approved AstraZeneca PLC's (NYSE:AZN) drug Crestor for use by children and teenagers with a genetic disease that causes high cholesterol, according to the company. The FDA cleared marketing for the drug for patients age 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, which is a disease that affects 10 million people worldwide and causes high levels of LDL cholesterol. The disease also causes greater risk of early heart disease. Initially when the company applied for new approval of the drug, the patents were extended by six months but they now scheduled to expire in July 2016. The company reported $3.6 billion in sales of Crestor in 2008 and it's the company's third best selling drug.
