Oct 16, 2009 (DEFENSE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- NCC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) acting commanding officer thanked the people of National City, Calif., Oct. 7 for their support of the base and the Sailors.

Cmdr. Vince Garcia served as guest speaker at National City Chamber of Commerce's 53rd Annual Salute to the Navy luncheon at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

"It was a great event recognizing our Sailors. The support of our neighbors is vital and much appreciated by everyone at Naval Base San Diego," said Garcia.

National City's Salute to Navy was founded local businessman George Buell who recognized the long and mutually supportive association between the military in San Diego and the strong ties between National City and its naval base neighbor.

Over 100 Sailors were treated to lunch and sat among community members and public officials from National City.

"The National City Chamber of Commerce together with the City of National City and the Unified Port of San Diego were honored to recognize the men and women in the Unites States Navy," said Jacqueline Reynoso, president and chief executive officer of the National City Chamber of Commerce, who helped coordinate the event. "National City's Salute to Navy has been a longstanding tradition for the past 53 years. With strong ties to the naval base, National City holds this event every year during the month of October and jointly celebrates the Navy's birthday. This is the first and longest running event of its kind in the United States."

At the luncheon, National City recognized their Outstanding Sailor of the Year, Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Genena Palacios from the USS Boxer. She received numerous certificates and letters of appreciation from local and state officials.

Naval Base San Diego is home to 56 ships, 25,000 Sailors and civilian employees and more than 150 tenant commands. The base supports the majority of the Pacific Fleet's surface combatants, all of the Navy's West Coast amphibious ships and a number of U.S. Coast Guard and Military Sealift Command vessels.
