A couple of blocks away, Aldi will build a supermarket on the former Mall Gaffney property located in the triangle of West Floyd Baker Boulevard and Ellis Ferry Avenue. Aldi's building is designed to cover 85,000 square feet and cost $900,000, according to the plans. Tony Lavender, city planning director, said Friday that work to correct drainage in the area next to the Aldi property was almost complete, and grading to build the grocery could start in a couple of weeks. Aldi will be built on the back of the mall property, which had not been used for more than 10 years. The development is encouraging in an economy yet to experience a turnaround, Lavender said. With the location of Tractor Supply at Cherokee Plaza, the Goodwill store will move to the opposite end of the strip mall. Rent-A-Center will move to the area between Badcock Home Furnishing and Dollar General. Tony Liller, vice president of marketing and development for Goodwill of the Upstate, said the store's move is expected to be complete by Nov. 19, when a grand re-opening is planned. "Changing locations is very good for us," Liller said. "What will make the site different from other stores is providing help for people looking for jobs. Assistance will be offered with writing resumes, getting job leads and using our equipment, including the fax, telephone, computer and copier. That's a first-time service in the area." The new store will have much more space than its current location, which will be razed to make way for Tractor Supply. Lavender said progress on the development at both the former mall and Cherokee Plaza sites was continuing at a steady pace.
