Sindh Environment and Alternative Energy Minister Shaikh Muhammad Afzal during question answer session in the House further said that a study has been carried out to assess the water quality and to check toxicity levels due to pollution in Manchhar Lake. The study was part of the scheme titled Surface Water Quality Monitoring in Sindh implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency in the year of 2004-05.
The minister informed the House that the results of the study indicate that due to pollution in Manchhar Lake by the MNV Drain coming from Balochistan, there is a depletion of oxygen and increase in quantity of heavy metals in the water, while decrease in biotic life has also been witnessed in water of Manchhar Lake. The water is also harmful to human health if used for drinking purposes, as it could cause cancer, respiratory diseases, dysentery and cholera, etc.
NPP MPA Arif Mustafa Jatoi was the mover of question sought additional information about the level of toxicity in the water and steps to provide drinking water to people of the area, especially fishermen, but the minister concerned could not satisfy to the lawmaker.
On the directives of the Speaker, the Environment minister assured the House to present details of the Environmental Impact Study of Manchhar Lake water. The minister conceded that the fishermen of the area are using the toxic water of Manchhar Lake as they have no other source of potable water, adding that it was the duty of the Irrigation Department to provide drinking water to people of the area.
He disclosed that majority of the fishermen have been migrated as number of varieties of fishes decreased to a large extent in Manchhar Lake due to toxic water being frequently flowing in the lake.
