No. 19 Hawaii-Hilo sweeps past Dominican

Oct 18, 2009 (The Honolulu Advertiser - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PAWEF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Josimara Pinheiro had 10 kills and 13 digs as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Dominican, 25-19, 25-19, 25-11, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match.

Kawena Cubi-Otineru added 11 kills and Morgan Bonney 10 for the No. 19 Vulcans (20-1, 10-1). Katie Swenson had 41 assists and Laura Rodriguez 11 digs.

Gabby Pecora had nine kills and nine digs for the Penguins (4-19, 0-10).

Also in the PacWest:

--Losaline Faka'osi had 14 kills and 22 digs, and Tanza Buroker added 15 kills as host Brigham Young-Hawai'i (11-10, 7-4) beat Notre Dame de Namur (8-17, 5-6), 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-19.

--Dana Eddington had 11 kills as Grand Canyon (14-8, 4-6) beat host Hawai'i Pacific (10-10, 7-4), 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. Kelly Balanay led HPU with 10 kills.

GOLF

Kawate's 71 leads

Mike Kawate shot a 71 yesterday to take a two-stroke lead after one round of the Turtle Bay Amateur.

UH in last place

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a 319 yesterday for a two-round total of 75-over 642 that kept the Rainbow Wahine in last place of the 15-team Stanford Intercollegiate tournament.

Arizona State leads with 282--555.

Vanderbilt's Marina Alex (71) and Arizona State's Carlota Ciganda (70) share the lead at 137. Corie Hou leads UH with 74--156 (tie 68th).

UCLA's Stephanie Kono, a Punahou alum, shot 75--144 (tie 22nd) and Denver's Kimberly Kim, a former Big Island resident, 73--150 (tie 45th).

SOCCER

Chaminade drops 2

Jordan Roylance scored two goals as Dixie State beat host Chaminade, 3-1, yesterday in a men's match. The Red Storm are 4-6-1, 2-5. Charles Johnson scored for the Silverswords (2-9, 1-7).

Also yesterday:

--Dixie State (8-3, 7-0) beat host Chaminade (0-11, 0-8), 5-0, in a PacWest women's match.

--Birmingham Southern (7-7) beat host Hawai'i Pacific (6-4-1), 2-1, in a non-conference women's match. Dyanne Anderson scored for HPU.

CROSS COUNTRY

BYUH sweeps

Brigham Young-Hawai'i dominated its invitational yesterday, taking the top spots individually and winning both team titles.

Spencer Deavila won the men's race in 25 minutes, 7 seconds, the second-fastest 8K in school history. The Seasiders had 24 points to beat runner-up Hawai'i-Hilo by 23 points.

Lacey Krout won the women's 5K in 19:12 and the Seasiders took four of the top five spots to score 19 points and beat runner-up Hawai'i Pacific by 29 points.
